The Importance of Flossing (with Braces on!)

Healthy habits start at an early age. That’s why at York Mills Orthodontics, we encourage and teach the importance of flossing and taking good care of your teeth from an early age! We often see patients at an early age. Remember, the American and Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child’s first orthodontic check-up should happen around the age of 7. As a parent, it’s important to pay attention to your children’s oral health as a part of their overall health. We urge parents to encourage their children to make their oral health a priority. Remind your child that it helps get rid of food particles and other harmful bacteria found in between their teeth. Brushing alone can’t get the full job done.

When should a child begin flossing?

Flossing removes food substances and plaque between teeth that are usually missed by brushing alone. You should encourage your child to floss as early as age 4. By the time they reach age 8, most children can start flossing for themselves.

How can flossing be a fun activity for children?

· Bring your children to your local pharmacy and allow them to choose the floss they want.

· Teach your children the flossing process. Show them how to correctly floss.

We recommend to floss between all of the teeth, at least once per day. Flossing can be a challenge when undergoing orthodontic treatment. However, it is important to take care of your teeth, even with braces on! When flossing, be sure to get under the wire and then move the floss with an up and down motion. There are different tools that can assist with making flossing easier. For example, we provide our patients with orthodontic floss threaders, as well as other helpful tools, which will help to get in between the teeth while wearing braces. The flossing aids that we provide can also be purchased at a local drugstore. Another tip is to make sure to rinse your mouth out, after flossing. You’ll want to get rid of all those loose food bits and bacteria particles you just set free!
