What is the Purpose of Retainers?

Orthodontic treatment doesn’t end the moment your braces come off. To get the maximum result from your orthodontic treatment, retainers are usually required.
Teeth naturally move on their own; it takes time for muscles and bones to adjust and settle after your braces have been removed. This is the main reason why you should wear retainers. A retainer helps stabilize your teeth after treatment, when your bones and teeth need some time to adapt to their new positions.

Another purpose of wearing retainers is the prevention of relapse. Relapse happens when your teeth and bite start to move back and form malocclusions. Orthodontic relapse can happen when patients who have had braces, neglect wearing their retainers. Therefore, it is essential that you wear retainers as instructed by your orthodontist.

Retainers are made to fit the exact shape and form of your teeth. Your orthodontist will either put you on permanent or removable retainers, depending on your condition. In some cases, an orthodontist would suggest both permanent and removable retainers just to make sure that they hold your teeth in their proper place.
