Why We Take X-Rays Before Orthodontic Treatment
X-rays are an important step before your orthodontic treatment can begin. At York Mills Orthodontics we make this step a part of your consultation. We want our patients and their families to have a good understanding of what to expect. We are happy to explain the importance of x-rays for your treatment.
Types of X-rays
There are different types of x-rays that can be taken.
Intraoral x-rays are very common in the dental field. The two types are bitewings and periodicals. With these images, a dental professional can see your tooth and its roots.
Extraoral x-rays are more common in orthodontic care. They show the structure of the tooth, but do not show as much detail as intraoral x-rays. The focus of extraoral is to show your teeth along with the development of the jaw and skull. Different types of extraoral x-rays include: panoramic, cephalometric, and CT cone beam.
- Panoramic – 2D view of the entire jaw and its supporting structures in one image.
- Cephalmotric – entire side of the head and teeth in relation to the jaw in one image.
- CT Cone Beam – 3D images of dental structures, soft tissue, nerves and bone.
Current Oral Health Check
X-rays help us see the ‘full picture’ of your oral health. Did you know that two-thirds of what goes on in your mouth is below the surface? When we can see everything, we can check if there are extra teeth, missing teeth, impacted teeth or teeth erupting in the wrong positions.
Custom Treatment Plan
Once we have taken x-rays, Dr. Morrow and our team will create a customized treatment plan for you to reach your goals. Using the x-rays and evaluation from your consultation we can let you know your treatment options including miniature self-ligating braces, clear braces and Invisalign. We can also give an approximate duration for your treatment too.
