DIY Ortho? Say no!

DIY (Do it Yourself) approach has become very popular in today’s society. There are numerous blogs, vlogs and books to show you how to get a job done on your own! While we commend others for building their own cabinet from scratch or stitching their own clothing – there are some things that should be left to the professionals, especially when it comes to healthcare.

DIY braces have raised many questions! Is this a good solution? Are DIY braces dangerous? The answer is yes, they are dangerous! Braces or clear aligner treatment should be monitored by a doctor’s supervision. Straightening teeth requires more than a Youtube video. It is a complex medical procedure. If done wrong, it can take thousands of dollars to fix and affect your long term dental health. There are some oral health concerns that may need to be addressed prior to using braces. Only a doctor (orthodontist) would be able to diagnose and correct these. Remember that orthodontists go to school for an additional 2-3 years after becoming a dentist, to become certified specialists in orthodontics. Mail to order aligners and DIY orthodontic treatments do not provide the expertise or a customized treatment plan to work especially for you. You also risk permanent damage to your teeth such as root shortening, tooth decay, and sometimes tooth loss!

Is DIY orthodontics worth it? The answer is no. If you have concerns about financial payments for your orthodontic treatment,  you’d be surprised that there are options to help out! If you think they are a fast solution, remember that treatment times will always vary depending on each individual case. No specific amount of time should be used across the board.
