Braces-Friendly Summer Snacks!

If you just began your orthodontics and you’re worried about what types of food and beverages are safe to eat this season, you’re not alone! Many people with orthodontic treatment have concerns about what they can and can’t enjoy, especially during those fun summer months. Luckily, there’s no need to fret! At York Mills Orthodontics, Dr. Morrow and our team of professionals are here to answer all of your questions, and give you a few summer snack suggestions if you’re currently undergoing treatment!

Soft, Healthy Foods Are Key

According to the Canadian Association of Orthodontics, softer snacks are the best options. These snacks won’t cause damage to the brackets of your braces, and won’t run the risk of complications to your treatment process! We recommend including these treats in your diet this summer.

  • Popsicles
  • Frozen Yogurt
  • Berry Smoothies
  • Bananas
  • Cheese
  • Yogurt

Avoid Hard, Crunchy Foods

It’s best to avoid harder, crunchy foods if you’re undergoing treatment this season. The particles from hard snacks can easily get stuck in between your teeth or braces. They can also cause damage to your braces, and can slow down your treatment. :

  • Celery
  • Whole Apples
  • Popcorn
  • Chips
  • Nuts

Avoid Chewy, Sticky Foods

According to Oral-B, sticky, chewy foods are typically higher in sugar, which can cause cavities, damage or loosen braces and wiring, and promote gum disease.

  • Caramels
  • Hard Candies
  • Fudges
  • Toffee
